Abstract

760,320. Heating wearing-apparel. GOURGUES, A., CHIANTELASSA, A., and SERRALUNGA, G. Feb. 24, 1954 [Feb. 24, 1953], No. 5178/53. Class 141. [Also in Group XIII] A device for promptly heating parts of a human body surrounded by a very cold atmosphere, e.g., the hands, feet, chest and back of a parachutist, comprises a series of individual heating elements connected to the parts to be heated and to which heat can be imparted simultaneously and practically instantaneously through a single control. The heating elements e.g. hand coverings 3, 4, Fig. 1, chest and back shield 2 and sock protectors 5, 6 are each double-walled, of thin rubber material, vinylic resin &c. with the opposing walls spot-welded to each other at 7, and are connected by fluid-tight ducts 8 to a main distributing compartment 9 which communicates by a duct 10, remotely controlled valve 11 and non-return valve 12 with a heat insulated container 13 for pre-heated liquid under pressure. The pressure on the pre-heated liquid may be created by a compressed gas cartridge actuated consequently upon actuation of the valve 11. The container 13 may be carried by the wearer or fixed and automatically released after functioning. An exothermic chemical cartridge 14 may heat the liquid. According to a modification, the individual heating elements on hands, feet &c. are each provided with a chemical substance providing exothermic reaction when primed by a liquid. The liquid container in each heating element is ruptured, when required, by passage of electric current from a battery through cables carried by the wearer, e.g. as part of a flight suit. According to a further modification, compressed gas from a bottle carried by the wearer is released when required to flow past an exothermic reaction unit located in each heating element applied to hands, feet &c. the heating elements having outlet apertures, directed towards the body, for the hot gas.
