Abstract

In a process for producing sulphur and possibly sulphur dioxide, wherein pyrites is heated in a distillation stage by sulphur vapour, and or sulphur dioxide, passed from the subsequent roasting stage, with or without an intermediate complete or partial reduction of sulphur dioxide to sulphur, to distil labile sulphur from the pyrites, and the pyrites is then passed to the roasting stage in which it is roasted to yield sulphur dioxide gases, which are passed to the distillation stage with or without intermediate complete or partial reduction, the distillation gases coming from the distillation stage are passed through fresh unheated pyrites, to effect pre-heating, thereof, before it is fed to the distillation stage, and the gases for roasting are passed through roasted ore discharged from the roasting stage, to effect, cooling of the roasted ore and preheating of the roasting gases, before the latter enter the roasting stage. Both solidgas heat-exchange contacts may be by fluidized technique, or either may be by indirect heat-exchange. Specifications 757,547 and 758,956 are referred to.
