Abstract
<PICT:0759655/III/1> Finely divided solids, such as carbon black or metallic oxides, are separated from an aerosol by passing the aerosol through cyclone separators in series, the separators being arranged so that part of the separated solids are returned to the inlet of the first cyclone of the series. Carbon black generated in a reactor 10 passes through a cooler 12 to the inlet of the first cyclone 14. Partly cleaned aerosol from the cyclone 14 is passed through the cyclone 16. Partly cleaned aerosol from the cyclone 16 passes to a filter 18 discharging gas to the atmosphere. Preferably four cyclones constitute the series and from one or more of the cyclones, preferably the last, a minor proportion of the aerosol is withdrawn through a pipe 26 to which is supplied solids recovered from the filter. The pipe 26 has a fan 28 and discharges into the inlet of the first cyclone. Solids are discharged from the cyclones to a gas line 32 which leads to cyclones 36, 38 and a filter 40 placed in series. The solids discharged from the cyclones 36, 38 and the filter 40 are collected in a conduit 46. In a modification the solids are discharged from the cyclones 14, 16 to a screw conveyer and the cyclones 36, 38 and the filter 40 are dispensed with.
