Abstract
<PICT:0824749/III/1> In the separation of carbon black from hot gaseous suspensions, by passage of the suspensions through a series of separating chambers, carbon black collects in hoppers attached to the lower ends of the separating chambers from whence with one exception it is removed together with sufficient reaction gases to carry the carbon black as a gaseous suspension, by a common conduit leading to the one separator chamber not connected to the common conduit, from whence it is collected. A carbon black furnace 1 supplies a hot gaseous suspension of carbon black to a cooler 2 provided with water-sprays 3 whereby the suspension is cooled to about 500 DEG F. The cooled suspension passes through 5 into an agglomerating chamber 6, which is an electrostatic precipitator, from the upper end of which the suspension passes through 7 to a cyclone separator 8 connected in series with cyclone separators 10 and 12 by conduits 9 and 11. Residual gases from the separator 12 may pass through 13 to a bag filter 14 where gases are freed from final traces of carbon black and are then discharged through 15. Portions of carbon black collect in the hoppers attached to the bottoms of the agglomerator the cyclone separators and the bag filter if used. Carbon black is sucked into the common conduit 16 by fan 17, through conduits 16, 18, 19 20 from hoppers 6, 10, 12, 14 together with sufficient reaction gases to produce a gaseous suspension. The reaction gases released into 16 are controlled by adjustable orifices 24. The gaseous suspension is pumped by 17 through conduit 21 to the cyclone separator 8, where carbon black is deposited in the hopper which is provided with gas lock valve 22 and discharge conduit 23 for removal of the carbon black. Operations of the process in the absence of an agglomerator, with feeding of the gaseous suspension to a separator other than the first for separation of the carbon black, or with incorporation of an additional cyclone separator before the agglomerator are referred to. Specification 742,187 is referred to.
