Abstract
759,387. Pipe joints. MORGAN, H. D., and STANTON IRONWORKS CO., Ltd. Nov. 23, 1954 [Dec. 4, 1953], No. 33818/53. Classes 99(1) and 99(2). A non-ferrous pipe joint, e.g. for concrete pipes, embodies a pair of spaced resilient packing rings f, g, defining an annular space h into which air or liquid under pressure can be introduced to fill the annular space h in order to test the fluid tightness of the joint, the end of one pipe being formed as a spigot with two conical portions c, d, co-operating with corresponding conical portions a, b, in a socket on the other pipe, so that the rings f, g are rolled over the portions c, d, into their sealing positions when the spigot is forced into the socket. Either the spigot portion or the socket portion has cast therein one or more screw threaded sleeves e leading into the annular space h. To test the completed joint the space h is filled with water under pressure through a pipe i connected to one of the sleeves e at j or through a hole in the socket, a second pipe i<SP>1</SP> being opened temporarily to permit the displaced air to escape. Alternatively the pipe i may supply compressed air for testing. After testing, the space h may be kept full of water under pressure to prevent seepage of air through the joint for example when the pipes are used to convey gas or water at less than atmosphere pressure. Cement grout may be introduced into the space h after the joint has been tested.
