Abstract

3 - Phenyl - 1 - p - sulphophenyl - 5 - pyrazolone is made by reacting the sodium salt of phenylhydrazine-p-sulphonic acid with ethyl benzoylacetate in the presence of calcium carbonate. The compound is used as a dyestuff intermediate, cf. Group IV (c).ALSO:The invention comprises a dye composition comprising a solution in at least one polyethylene glycol of molecular weight of at least 1,000, e.g. 1,000-6,000, of a dye of formula <FORM:0758969/IV(c)/1> where R is a sulphonated aryl radicle, R1 is a chlorinated p - sulphophenyl radicle and R11 is a hydrocarbon radicle, or a water-soluble salt thereof. Carbowax is a specified glycol. The compositions are used in the hand colouring of photographic relief images (see Group XX). The preparation in conventional fashion of 4 - (2, 5 - dichloro - 4 - sulphophenylazo) - 3 - phenyl - 1 - p - sulphophenyl - and - 3 - methyl - 1, 71 - naphthalene - 11, 31 - disulphonic acids and a solution of the former and triethanolamine in a polyethylene glycol are described.
