Abstract

758,764. Electroplating. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. April 15, 1954 [April 24, 1953], No. 11155/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 41. [Also in Group XV] Refractory material bases, e.g. ceramics or glass, are provided with adherent electricallyconductive metallic coatings by iridizing the surface of the base, as by spraying it, after heating to between 1000‹ and 1200‹ F., with a solution of stannic chloride, or with bromides, chlorides or acetates of suitable metallic substances, and, after cooling, electroplating the conductive material, e.g. copper, on the iridized surface. After firing in hydrogen, the surface of the metal may be burnished. The coating may be deposited in the form of a pattern by masking part of the surface before iridizing. In an example a rod is masked with a helical layer of carbon or metal foil, which is removed after iridizing. The rod is then electroplated. The invention may be applied to components for electronic equipment, such as television tubes and tuning devices. U.S.A. Specification 2,559,969 is referred to.
