Abstract

758,705. Clamp fasteners. SCHWARZ, J. Nov. 12, 1954 [Dec. 23, 1953; Oct. 13, 1954], No. 32774/54. Class 44. An adjustable fastener comprises upper and lower connecting parts, the upper connecting part b including a strip 1 adapted to engage against the lower connecting part a, the lower connecting part including a bell-crank lever 14 and a plate 9 contacted by the strip, the bellcrank lever being adapted to engage the strip and to press it into contact with and retain it against separation from the lower connecting part by mutual co-operation of interengaging formations provided on the strip and the lower connecting part or the bell-crank lever thereof. In one construction, Fig. 3, the plate 9 forms the base of a channel in the sides of whicb the bell-crank lever is pivoted in apertures 12. The plate 9 is provided with ratchet teeth 18 and these teeth are engaged by complementary teeth 2 on the strip 1. The engaging end of the bell-crank lever may be straight as shown or curved to reduce wear. Each of the parts a, b is connected to the article to be fastened by tongues 5 or 20 which pass through apertures in the article and are bent over. The part b may be made up of two or more elements hinged together. As shown in Fig. 6, the hinge may consist of a sleeve engaging apertures in two elements 22, 23 and arranged so that when the elements reach an aligned position they cannot hinge further owing to their edges abutting. In a modification, Figs. 8 and 9, the part b is provided with a plurality of slots 30 and the plate 9 is plain, the bell-crank lever being provided with a tongue 31 which can engage in one of the slots. In a modification of this construction open ended slots are provided in each edge of the strip 1 and the bell-crank lever is provided with two tongues one for each set of slots. In this construction the web between the tongues is arranged to press on the strip 1 to force it into contact with the plate 9. In another construction two rows of indentations are provided in the strip 1 and the plate 9 is provided with corresponding recesses. In any of the constructions instead of using tongues to secure each part to the article each part may have one end bent over and be provided with a slot by which it can be secured to a strap.
