Description
Sept. 20, 1932. wlEsENFELD ELASTIC SPAT.
' Filed June 25, 1950 INVENTOR Wb la@ :LE eo Patented Sept. Z0, 1932 l f UNITED STATES LEO WrnsENrELD, or BROOKLYN, NEW YORK ELAsTIo 'senr Appncaaon mea 111116.25, i930'.` serial Njo. 463,603.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement 1n a spat.
The invention has for an `object the pro-r vision of a device of the class mentioned which is of simple dura-ble construction, dependable in useand eflicient in action, and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost. v 4
The invention proposes in combination with a spat having a side opening of a strip of material attached along` one edge of said opening, stitches between said strip and spat formingl spaced horizontal pockets with openings at said edge,v elastic tabs secured at their inner ends within said pockets, snap fastener Yelements on the free ends of said tabs, and complementary snap fastener elements on the other edge of said spat opening; The invention also proposes a means for detachably holding .said'strip in? place. Another object of theinvention is to provide a means for changing the positionof said com plementary snap fastener elements for adjustments 'of the tensions ofsaid tabs A'in closed positions. Y Y j Y For further Acomprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be'had to the following description and accompanying'drawing, and to the appended claims inwhich the various novel features ofthe 'inventionfare more par# ticularly set forth.v Y
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure Figgvlis a side elevational view of a spa constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2y is a plan view of Fig. 1. Y Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view tak-enon the line 3-3'of Fig; 1..
Figlis a fragmentary enlarged inside elevational view. Y l Y l Fig. 5 is a fragmentary inside elevational view of a portion of the spat. Y Fig. 6 is a view similar lto Fig. 5, but illus# trating a modified form. 1 n Fig. 7 is asectional view taken on the line F.' g. 8 is an elevational viewof a' portion oftheinside of the spat constructed accordingtolmodified form. s
View .of a portionof Fig. 6."
Fig..9 is anenlarged sectional view :taken on the line 9 9 of Fig. 8. Y l l Fig. lO'is asimilar view toFig 1 showing a modified form ofthe invention.
Fig. 11` is an enlarged detailed fragmentary he'spat 10 has a side opening 11 s trpbf material 12 is attached along one Hedge` of said opening. .The'attachment of strip12 is accomplishedby stitches l'and v14. rIhe stitches 13 extend up and down and serve to'hold the rea-r edge ofthe strip-12 in place, while the stitches 14 extend longitudinally and in addition to holding the strip vin place; from a plurality of horizontal spaced .pockets-.15. Elastictabs 16 have theirinner endsx17y secured withinv the pocketsv and extend through the pockets so that their outer ends slightly project.A Snap. fastener elements, 18 are attachedv upon thev free -ends of the tabs. 16 and are engageable .on comple'- mentary snap fastenerV elements V19 attached uponthe-other edge of the spat opening.
and 'a The spat 10 is. made from heavy felt. It'
consists oftwo side sections 20 and 21 attachedtogether along thefront: and rear edges 22 and 23 respectively. The attachment is accomplished by Vsewingthe adjacent edges of the sections together by stitches 24, .then
securing a binding strip 25 over the edges tac'hedvat therear portion of the spat at the lower edge; A base elastic strap 31 is attached across the s ide sections 20 and 21 for -engaging under the shoe of a wearer. `The sideopening 11 ofthe spat extendsfrom the' top completely to thebottom. The snap' ifastener elements-.18 are socket elements andthe other elements 19 are stud elements. The 'socket elements are immediately kadjacent the of the section 27. This arrangement allows an overlapping of the edges as clearly shown in Fig. 2. A reinforcement strip 32 is secured by stitches 33to the inner side of the portion 27 and the snap fastener studs 19.- engage throughthis strip. and through .the material of the spat so as to b e mountedupon aY firm foundation.
In the modied form `of the device illus-7 trated in Figs. 6 and 7, a means has'beenf. shown for detachablyfholding the strip 12a in place. This strip 12a is formed of two layers indicated by reference numerals 34 and 35.'VA

A piece of elastic material 47 is interposed between the ends of the strip 44 and normally in contracted position holds the studs 19 in one of the ends of theU shaped slots 46.
yFor changing the positions ofthe Studs 19, it is merely necessary 'to move the strip 44 so astostretch the insert 47 for moving the studs A19 out fromktheends of the U shaped 'slots and then move the strip 44 laterally as allowed by the slots 42 to anew position so lthatw'vhen released the elastic insert 47 contrantsthe strip, andl moves the snap fastener studs into 'the other ends of the U shaped Slot s.44.,fv `,In the newl .position .thefstulds;x` 19 are located at derentdistanees fronnthe edge forming thesideopenng in, the, sp .at and necessarily at. a diderent distanee from the y `4Vsnap.,fas.tener sokets.I Vplementary row` of hooklessfastening-rele-VV vInoperation oi-thefspat, it isengaged upon a slroe. inf a conventional fashion, that is., the strap 31 is positioned below one Shoe and thespatxaronnd the Shoe; Thesnap. fastenerstudlssoeketszare. engaged to; close the side, opening-of the spat.
