Abstract
Metal powders are prepared by reducing at least one metal compound, other than an alkali metal compound, with one or more finely divided alkali metals suspended in an inert liquid medium. The metal compound is preferably a halide of the required metal and the inert medium may be benzene, xylene, toluene, gasolene, kerosene, mineral oil, isoparaffin mixtures, n-octane and n-decane. Up to 2 per cent of a dispersing agent, e.g. a fatty acid, activated carbon, charcoal or carbon black, is preferably added to the dispersion. The process is preferably performed under an inert atmosphere and the metal powder may be recovered from the reaction mixture by filtering or centrifuging after treating with an alcohol and water to "kill" any excess alkali metal. The preparation of Fe, Zn, Cu, Ag, Cr, Co, Cd, Sn, Mn, Ni, Mo, Ag powders and of the powders of Cu-Zn, Fe-Cr, Ag-Cu, Cu-Sn, Sn-Zn alloys, by the simultaneous reduction of two compounds, is described.
