A catch for pivotal doors, windows, shutters or the like having a locking member 4 or 19 pivotally mounted in a shell or the like 2 or 16 attached to the door or the like 1 or 15 and adapted to engage with a fitting 9 or 23 attached to the door or like frame 8 or 22 on moving the door or the like into closed position, is characterized in that the locking member is shaped and adapted to co-operate with the fitting 9 or 23 in such a way that the member 4 or 19 is maintained released in the open position of the door or the like and is maintained in the locking position in the shut position of the door or the like by spring action provided by a curved leaf-spring 12 or 20 one end of which engages with the locking member and the other end of which engages a support 13 or 21 in the shell or the like in such a manner that the curved portion of the spring is inverted on turning the locking member from the released position to the locking position and vice versa. In one construction, Fig. 3, the locking member has two projections 5 and 6 and in the open position of the door of the like the projection 6 protrudes from the shell and as the door or the like is closed it engages a lip 7 on the fitting 9. This engagement moves the locking member so that the other projection 5 engages the rear of the fitting 9 to latch the door or the like. In this construction the support for the leaf-spring is adjustable by means of a screw 14 so that the tension of the spring can be varied. In another construction, Fig. 7, the fitting 23 has two lips 24 and 25, the lip 25 is spaced rearwardly in the closing direction of the door or the like from the lip 24 and protrudes from the frame 22. As the door of the like is closed the looking member 19 engages the extended portion of the lip 25 and is rotated to a position between the two lips 24, 25 to latch the door or the like. In this construction both the shell and the fitting are provided with teeth so that they can be engaged in recesses in the door or the like or the frame without the use of fixing screws or the like.
