Abstract

757,959. Concrete sleepers. EVERTS & VAN DER WEYDEN N.V. Sept. 16, 1954 [Sept. 18, 1953], No. 26889/54. Class 104 (2). A concrete sleeper provides with plugged holes for the insertion of spikes or other pinshaped members for the fixing of rails or rail fasteners has the cross-section of the plug holes, the plugs and/or spikes such that the' compressive stresses to be resisted by the concrete are greater in a plane passing through the axis of the hole in the longitudinal direction of the sleeper or in a plane parallel thereto than in any plane at right angles thereto. A blind tapered hole 1 of rectangular crosssection with rounded corners, or elliptical, Fig. 4 (not shown) or circular, Fig. 5 (not shown) has a hollow nylon plug 3, having a tapered bore 5 and provided with ridges 4 on its outer surface, inserted therein, a rail-holding spike 13 having a parallel shank of a cross-section similar to the hole 5 in the plug 3 is pressed into the hole 5 in the plug 3 and exerts a compressive stress on the concrete sleeper 2, the stresses exerted being greater on the axis a-b lying in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the sleeper 2 than in the axis c-d at right angles thereto. A collar 17 on the spike 13 limits its insertion and so prevents the longitudinal deformation of the plug 3. If a circular hole 1 and plug 3 are used with a spike 13 having a parallel shank of oval section the major axis of the oval shank is arranged along the axis a-b. Alternatively, if an oval hole 1 and plug 3 are used with a spike 13 having a parallel and circular shank the minor axis of the oval hole 1 and plug 3 is arranged along the axis a-b. The rail 12 is held in position and on each side against an elastic plate 16 by a pair of spikes 13, passing through a strip 14 or pair of plates and an electrically insulating plate 15 into the plugs 3, joined by loops connected by a flat portion 18 engaging the foot of the rail 12. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the loops are omitted. The sleeper consists of two concrete blocks 2 joined by a metal tube 20.
