In a bed arranged to fold into a cabinet 1 simulating a fireplace, the bed structure is pivoted in the cabinet cantilever fashion at 26, having an inner short arm and an outer long arm, and a tension spring 32 is attached to the outer end rail of the bed and to a link of a chain linkage 31 connecting pivot block 27 with a pivoted leg piece 8 and having a short linkage 29 and a second spring 33 connects the same link to leg 8, the spring assembly exerting an initial opening force during the lowering of the bed and then countering the major portion of the opening movement. Paddles 6, 7 restrain the bedclothes 5 in position in the folded position and are pivoted at 37 to an actuating arm 35 pivoted on the end rail of the bed and having a spring 34 connected thereto to urge the paddle on to the bedding in the closed position, the paddle itself being counterweighted at 37<SP>1</SP>. The cabinet contains in a recessed portion an electric fire 4 and the shell above the bed level has shelves, recesses 10 or drawers. The shell 1 may also contain a weight 50 to prevent it tipping forward when the bed is unfolded.
