757,952. Electrolysis. SOC. DE CONDENSATION ET D'APPLICATION MECANIQUES. June 29, 1954 [Aug. 3, 1953], No. 19023/54. Class 41. [Also in Group XVIII] A method of protecting a surface of copper or copper alloy, e.g. the tubes 1 of a condenser, along which salt water is circulated, comprises continuously subjecting the water before passage over the surface to an electrolytic action effected by means including an iron anode 13, all the products of the action being circulated along the surface. The tubes 1 are mounted, e.g. through insulating joints 7, 8 in a ferrous metal casing 4, 5, 6 which is made the cathode. Potassium permanganate may be added to the water to form manganese dioxide coatings (which include copper oxide) on the pipes 1, a manganese anode 14 in the condenser serving to maintain the dioxide coating. The various oxide coatings on the tubes 1 are formed by the reduction of higher metal oxide ions formed at the anodes and carried to the pipes 1.
