Abstract
757,930. Spinning yarns carding-engines. HOPKINSON, H. Nov. 30, 1954 [Nov. 30, 1953], No. 33142/53. Classes 120(1) and 120(3). A " flaked " yarn, i.e. a yam having a speckled effect, is produced by the addition to a carded web, immediately before it enters the nip of the calender rollers in a carding machine, of a slubbing or unspun thread through a raddle reciprocated laterally relative to the direction of travel of the web. In an example, 25 slubbings are distributed over a web which is subsequently divided into 100 ends. In the modified carding-engine shown, slubbing S is delivered from a roller 27 by a surface drum 31, over a tensioning roller 35 and thence through a raddle, comprising spacing wires 39 mounted on a shaft 37, to the web W. The shaft 32 of the drum 31 is driven through a gear train 33 from calender roller shafts 8 and 10, and itself drives through bevel gears 51, 49, mechanism comprising a sliding bar 41 adapted to move across the face of a plate wheel 43 and whereby the raddle shaft 37 is reciprocated. If slubbings of two or more colours are applied to the web, the roller 27 is replaced by a series of rollers each feeding slubbing of a separate colour.
