Abstract

The dying properties of heat-treated polyvinyl alcohol fibres are improved by treatment with an amino-compound of formula NH2-R-A, where A is an aldehyde or acetal group -CH(OR1)2, R1 an alkyl group, and R an alkyl, aryl or alicyclic group containing at least two carbon atoms, which may also contain an element other than carbon or hydrogen, so that the nitrogen content of the product is brought within the range 0.02 to 5 per cent by weight. The polyvinyl alcohol fibre contains at least 80 per cent vinyl alcohol units. The reaction may be carried out in an acidified aqueous solution of the amino-compound and the fibres may be treated with formaldehyde or an aliphatic aldehyde containing at least two carbon atoms in the aliphatic chain, before, after or at the same time as, the amino treatment. Preferably the fibres to be treated have been heat-treated so as not to dissolve in water of below 70 DEG C. and to shrink or elongate in water at 50 DEG C. not more than 20 per cent in any direction, e.g. the fibres may be treated from 140 DEG to 225 DEG C. until they shrink in water at 80 DEG C. not more than 5 per cent of their original length. Specification 733,102 is referred to.
