Abstract

A polycaprolactam spinning composition contains as optical brightener a benzimidazole compound of the formula:- <FORM:0865804/IV (a)/1> which may be added to the monomer before carrying out the polycondensation or at any time during polycondensation. In the example, e -caprolactam is polymerized in the presence of the compound specified above.ALSO:An optical brightener of the formula: <FORM:0865804/IV (b)/1> is prepared by reacting 2-methyl-benzimidazole with benzaldehyde-4-carboxylic acid in the melt.ALSO:A permanent light-proof and wash-proof brightening effect is imparted to textiles made from polycaprolactam by treating them with a benzimidazole compound of the formula:- <FORM:0865804/IV(c)/1>
