Abstract

Polyacrylonitrile containing materials are dyed by padding with a mixture containing a dye, ortho-mita or para-cresol and an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol, the dyeing is fixed by steaming. The material contains at least 40% polyacrylonitrile which may be copolymerised with vinyl acetate, or chloride, or pyridine, or with acrylates e.g. methyl methacrylate or methallyl sulphoric acid or its salts. A mixture of ortho, meta or para cresols may be used preferably at concentrations of at least 30 gm of cresol per litre. The aliphatic polyhydric alcohols used preferably contain not more than six carbon atoms especially ethylene, diethylene, propylene, pentamethylene and hexamethylene glycols, glycerine, butane and pentane triols, ethythritol and pentaerythritol. At least twice the amount of polyhydric alcohol (by weight) to that of cresol is used. Steaming is at 100-150 DEG C.
