Abstract
<PICT:0757616/III/1> A vessel 11 such as a spherical or partspherical flask or reaction vessel is heated or cooled by means of a jacket 1, 2 through which a heating or cooling fluid is passed, a heat-conducting resilient preferably self-supporting mattress 12 being interposed between the inner wall 1 of the jacket and the vessel. The jacket may be provided with an opening through which the neck 13 of the vessel can pass and with inlet and outlet connections (not shown) for the heating or cooling fluid and with connections for pressure gauges, relief valves and for the removal of condensate if necessary. The mattress 12 is preferably of woven metallic material (e.g. copper), but it may comprise a low melting point metal, e.g. Woods metal or mercury or a powder, e.g. graphite or copper, in which case a sealing ring 16 around the opening in the vessel is provided. The jacket may be enclosed in a heat-insulated container. According to the Provisional Specification the liquid in the jacket may be heated by an immersion heater.
