A clutch through which an air compressor is driven by the engine of a motor vehicle is disengaged upon the attainment of a predetermined pressure in a reservoir supplied by the compressor. The reservoir pressure acts continuously on an adjustably spring-loaded plunger 1 which has a lost-motion connection with one arm 6 of a toggle mechanism of which the other arm comprises a spring 5. The toggle actuates a rod 13 which mounts a closure member 12 balanced as regards reservoir pressure admitted at 17 by a piston 15 and movable to connect a clutch-actuating cylinder either with the reservoir to disengage the clutch or with exhaust. In a modification, the plunger 1 acts on the knuckle of the toggle and a pair of control valves for the clutch actuator are operated by the lower part of the rigid arm of the toggle. In a further modification, two valves are operated by a cross-arm on the rigid arm of the toggle.
