Abstract
757,359. Dimming control systems for lamps. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 5, 1955 [Jan. 28, 1954; June 14, 1954], Nos. 2663/54 and 17471/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (4). In a dimming control system for incandescent or fluorescent lamps wherein the lamps are supplied from an A.C. source through discharge valves, preferably arranged back-to-back, controlled by variation of a D.C. grid voltage which is superimposed upon an A.C. hold-off voltage, sudden changes of brightness, due to, say, coarseness of the D.C. voltage controller, are avoided by the provision of a time delay network at the output terminals of the variable D.C. voltage source. The time constants may be different for falling and rising voltages. Separate D.C. voltage sources and time constant circuits are preferably provided for each valve in the case of a back-to-back pair, the grid circuits of the two valves being inductively coupled to provide for still smoother control. Such coupling may be provided by a double wound relay having its windings connected, respectively, to the two time-constant networks and the relay functioning to disconnect the lamps from the A.C. source and to interrupt the supply of heater current when the discharge currents of the networks reach a low value.
