Abstract

757,053. Pneumatic separators. HARDINGE, H. May 24, 1954, No. 15198/54. Class 117. A horizontal or vertical air-current separator for pulverised material carried in a fluid stream has a rotary impeller in the classifying area. As shown the impeller is housed in a frustoconical casing 10 and comprises vanes 36 carried by plates 32, 34 mounted on a shaft 22 driven by a motor 26. Preferably a conical sheet metal shield 38 extends between the plates 32, 34 inside vanes 36 to define an annular passage 40 between the impeller and the casing. Material introduced into the air stream is carried up pipe 16 and impinges on plate 32; the coarser particles being deflected sideways to the casing fall out by gravity, and the stream then moves up through the annular space 40 between the impeller and casing. A scraper 68 is provided to remove particles settling on the top plate 34. The finer particles pass through the outlet conduit 20 to a separator, Fig. 8 (not shown). Modifications. (i) The shield 38 may be omitted, (ii) a similar arrangement may be used with a horizontal air stream, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), (iii) a cylindrical impeller and casing may be used for a vertical or horizontal separator, Figs. 3 . . 5 (not shown) Specifications 257,568, 263,820 [both in Class 23], and 560,450 are referred to.
