Abstract

Urea is synthesized by reacting carbon dioxide and ammonia at elevated temperature and pressure under substantially oxygen-free conditions, characterized in that the reaction is carried out in a vessel lined with copper or a copper alloy in which the copper content is at least 80 per cent. Suitable copper alloys are alumibrass, phosphor bronze, alblack, AR, cupronickel and "Everdur" (Registered Trade Mark). Data is given showing the corrosion rate of copper and various alloys under urea synthesis conditions wherein the ratio of ammonia/carbon dioxide is 4:1 at a temperature of 175 DEG C. and a pressure of 180 atm., both in the absence of, and in the presence of, oxygen. High-nickel content alloys such as "Monel" metals, "Inconel" (Registered Trade Marks) and duranickel, tested under the same conditions, also give good results when compared with lead.ALSO:A vessel lined with copper or a copper alloy in which the copper content is at least 80 per cent is used for the synthesis of urea by reacting carbon dioxide and ammonia at elevated temperature and pressure under substantially oxygen-free conditions. Suitable copper alloys are alumibrass, phosphor bronze, alblack, AR, cupronickel and "Everdur" (Registered Trade Mark). The corrosion rate of highcopper alloys is compared to that of lead under urea synthesis conditions. Highnickel alloys such as "Monel" metals, "Inconel" (Registered Trade Marks), and duranickel also give good results under the same conditions.
