756,823. Batteries. SOC. E.R.E.C. SOC. D'ETUDES DE REALISATION ET D'EXPLOITATIONS COMMERCIALES: Oct. 27, 1954 [Oct. 28, 1953], No. 31008/54. Class 53. Apparatus for filling a number of cells with electrolyte comprises two relatively movable plates 3, 4 provided with openings 6, 7 which are normally out of register, the plate 3 forming the base of a reservoir 1 containing electrolyte, the cells being placed beneath the openings in the lower plate. As shown in plan in Fig. 2 the plates are provided with two series of openings and the plate 4 can be rotated relatively to the plate 3 which is fixed. A second fixed plate 5 having openings 9 may be provided below the plate 4. To make the openings watertight when out of register the openings 6 are closed by frangible diaphragms 8 which are supported by the solid parts of the plate 4. When the plate 4 is rotated to bring the openings 7 beneath the openings 6 the weight of the electrolyte breaks the diaphragms and electrolyte flows from the reservoir 1 into the cells. The plate 4 can be rotated by the devices shown in Figs. 3 and 7 and is returned to its initial position after the cells have been filled by a spring 10. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3 the plate 3 is provided with an oblique passage 11 normally closed by a cap 15 which has a weakened part 16 enabling it to be readily broken whereupon liquid flowing down the passage 11 strikes the surface 13 of an opening 12 in the lower plate and rotates it to open the passages 6, 7. A member 18 wedged between the plates 4, 5 keeps the opening 12 in communication with the cell below it when the openings 6, 7 are closed so that electrolyte can flow down the passage 11 as soon as the cap 15 is removed. The member 18 drops into the cell below and when the plate 4 is returned to its initial position by the spring 10 it is rotated sufficiently to close the openings 12, 14. Fig. 7 shows an alternative method of moving the plate 4 in which a closed recess 24 partly overlaps an opening 21 closed by diaphragms 22, 23 in the upper plate. When a spring-controlled plunger 26 is depressed it breaks the diaphragms and its lower face 20 engages a bevelled edge 25 on the wall of the recess 24 and moves the plate 4 as it passes downwardly into the recess 24. In another modification the plate 4 is moved by a screw and nut arrangement.
