Abstract
756,802. Bridges; girders; roofs; scaffolding. GOLLNOW, J. D. June 28, 1954 [June 27, 1953], No. 18930/54. Classes 20(1), 20(2) and 20(4). A girder structure which may form part of a scaffolding, bridge or roof comprises rigid uprights 4 depending from a tensioned cable 1 and joined to a tensioned cable 2, with diagonal cables 3. The cables are of steel wire and the structure, when used as part of a bridge, is assembled on one side of the bridge span in a slack condition by means of an auxiliary cable 11 extending between posts 5. The uprights are supported on the cable 11 by pulleys 13 secured to the uprights by brackets, and when all of them have been so supported the assembly is pulled by a cable 15 secured to the top of the end upright across the bridge span. When the structure is thus extended, the cable 15 and pulleys 13 are removed. In a further embodiment the structure is loosely assembled between a bridge post and an auxiliary post and is then pulled taut across the bridge span. If the bridge banks are steep the posts 5 may be dispensed with. After the erection of two or more such structures the remaining parts of the bridge such as the road deck, additional ties &c., may be erected.
