Abstract

Rough matte filaments of polyethylene terephthalate, which has been produced by polycondensation in a high-boiling solvent therefor, are obtained by melt-spinning the polyethylene terephthalate while it still contains 5-30, preferably 7-12, per cent by weight of solvent, passing the resultant filaments, while still hot, through air for a short distance and through a bath comprising one or more cold organic liquids which are miscible with the solvent in the filaments but do not dissolve polyethylene terephthalate, highly stretching the filaments and then treating them with superheated steam. The solvent may be diphenyl methane, diphenyl oxide, diphenyl, benzophenone or alphamethyl naphthalene. The organic liquid used for the after-treatment of the filaments may be carbon tetrachloride, tetrachloro - ethylene, acetone or tetrahydro-naphthalene. In the example polyethylene terephthalate, which still contains 10 per cent by weight of alpha-methyl naphthalene, is melt-spun in known manner and the resulting filaments containing solvent, while still hot, are passed through air for about 10 cm. into a bath of cold carbon tetrachloride. The filaments are withdrawn from the bath, spooled, and highly stretched in the usual manner, and the stretched filaments, spooled on perforated rollers, are then treated with steam at 130 DEG C.
