<PICT:0756526/III/1> For preventing darkening of glass tubes by the action of mercury, a material capable of absorbing very small mercury particles is provided on a suitable inner portion of the glass tubes where they need not be transparent for observation purposes. The method is shown applied to a sphygmomanometer, the inner walls of a container 10 for mercury are coated with an adhesive 11 having a glue, resin or rubber base. The container is connected to a manometer 7. The container has a cap 2 with a sealing ring 3. A channel 12 in the cap communicates through a leather membrane 4 with an air conduit 5. In use, mercury particles adhere to the adhesive and the walls of the tube are kept clean. It is most advantageous to coat 20 per cent to about 40 per cent of the tube surface along which the mercury passes.
