Abstract

756,341. Towing ceramic ware. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., BENTLEY, A. M., GARRATT, L., and SMITH, C. A. April 14, 1954 [April 15, 1953], No. 10236/53. Class 60 [Also in Group X] In a machine for towing and fettling articles of ceramic ware, the article is placed on a rotary support and the towing tool is moved relatively thereto so as to operate on the work progressively along a spiral path. In one construction, a blank B on a support S is operated on by a towing tool T carried by a pivoted arm 394. The tool T comprises spring- pressed pivoted arms 454, 456, 458, 460, each provided with a rubber block 462, of which one supports a piece of emery cloth 464 and the others pieces of felt 466. The arm 394 is controlled by a cam 302 and is rocked about a horizontal pivot 399 by a cam face 314 cooperating with a roll 436 on a two-armed lever 434, 432 which is coupled to a plunger 418 provided with a cam plate 414; the latter co-operates with a roll 410 on the arm 394 to further control the movement of the arm about its pivot 399 as the pivot support 398 is rocked about a vertical shaft 400 by a face 310 on the cam 302. At each operation of the machine which is effected by depressing a treadle 152 (not shown), the cam 302 is moved through one revolution by the engagement of a tooth 330 on a spring-pressed plunger with a continuously driven clutch member 306 disengagement of the tooth being effected by a trip member 344. The support S comprises a plaster head 166 arranged on a carrier 90 secured to a hollow vertical shaft 64 which is driven at varying speeds by a belt 100 which is pressed into engagement with a pulley 92 by a pulley 124 carried by an arm 126 which is controlled by the treadle 152 (not shown) through rod 134, bellcrank 138, 140 and rod 150. The blank B is held in position by a, rubber cup 168 to which suction is applied through a tube 178 (not shown) within the hollow shaft 64 under the control of a valve which consists of a vertically slidable sleeve 214 having a rubber face co-operating with vent holes in a member 182. The sleeve 214 is operable by a handle 237 (not shown) and released through a trip device. A brake 160 is provided for the shaft 64. Towing of the edge of the blank B' is effected by a felt pad 542 mountedon a spring steel arm 536 which can be swung by hand about a vertical rod 470, being normally held in inoperative position by a clip 534. In a modified construction, the main towing tool T is replaced by a rotary tool 604, Fig. 18, comprising a felt disc 610 backed by a bristle brush 608.
