Abstract
756,164. Chucks. LANDAUF, V. Aug. 24, 1953 [Sept.. 23, 1952], No. 23289/53. Class 83(3). A hydraulic chuck comprises body 1, Fig. 1, containing a sleeve 19 slidable axially by pistons 15, and jaws 16 supported in radial slots in the body and having portions engaging bevelled 'slots 20 in the sleeve so that axial movements of the sleeve move the jaws radially. The pistons 15, e.g. three, equally-spaced circumferentially in cylinders in the body, are urged by springs 17 in the jaw-opening direction and by hydraulic fluid in the jaw-closing direction. The liquid in reservoir 12, Fig. 3, is pressurized by a piston pump 2, actuated during rotation of the chuck by a tappet 3 having roller 4 engaging a stationary cam track 5, and supplied through non-return valve 14 to channel 28 which leads to accumulator cylinder 22 containing a spring-loaded piston 23. Cylinder 22 communicates with one cylinder 15 via channel 27 containing valve 25, this cylinder being connected to the others through channel 31, and the cylinders 15 are connected to the reservoir via channel 29 containing valve 26. Thus by closing valve 26 and opening valve 25, the jaws move inwards, and by opening valve 26 and closing valve 25 the jaws move radially outwards. The pump is stopped by a latch 10 engaging a groove 9 in piston 2, when the liquid pressure reaches a value sufficient to overcome spring 11.
