Abstract
756,145. Saws. FIRTH-BROWN TOOLS, Ltd. Sept. 11, 1953 [June 11, 1952], No. 14757/52. Class 145 A straight or circular saw with a number of cutting edges which are separated by swarf-receiving gullets or recesses has, for each or some of the cutting edges, a non- cutting rubbing surface ahead of the gullet, this surface being a few thousandths of an inch below the cutting edge and bearing on the work cut by a preceding edge so as to limit the depth to which the edge can enter into the work. The rubbing surface may be constituted by the whole or part of a groove 17 swaged in a heel portion 16 of the tooth behind the cutting edge 14 and the side edges are sharpened so that they cut slits in the work, the material between the slits being removed by the succeeding cutting edge. Alternatively plain ungrooved heel portions may be provided or the heel portions of successive teeth are alternately bevelled and, if necessary, set to form single longitudinally extending cutting edges 16a, Fig. 5, alternately on opposite sides of the saw; the sides of the bevels may constitute the rubbing surface or such surfaces may be provided at their roots.
