Abstract

756,056. Launching aircraft. M. L. AVIATION CO., Ltd. Aug. 13, 1954 [Aug. 13, 1953, No. 22361/53. Class 4. In a launching apparatus for rocket-propelled or rocket-assisted aircraft, the aircraft is mounted in a cradle which is adjusted to the initial angle of flight and the aircraft is launched directly from the cradle by means of the simultaneous firing of two rockets, means being provided for holding the aircraft until both of the rockets have started to fire. The aircraft is provided with detachable rockets 3, 4 to assist its take-off from the launcher, the upper part of which comprises a cradle 2 to support the aircraft by means of struts 12, 13 provided with extensions 9 and 11 which co-operate with slots 7 and 8 in the wings 5, 6 to enable the aircraft to move freely when launched. The tail of the aircraft carries a bracket 15 having a pin 16 engaged by a fixed catch 17 and a further catch 18 pivoted at 19 to the cradle and urged into a pinreleasing position by a spring 34. The catch 18 is formed with a tail 21 and to hold the catch locked this is engaged by a projection 22 on a torque tube 23 which is retained-in the position shown against the action of springs 33 by cords 26 each connected at one end to an arm 24 fast with the tube 23 and at the other end to a lug 30 on the aircraft, the cords passing round struts 28, 29 and being so positioned that each is in the path of exhaust gases from a rocket. The cradle carries a starter (not shown) for the aircraft engine and a propeller guard 47 and a jack (not shown) is provided whereby the cradle may be rocked about a shaft 35 to locate the aircraft in its correct attitude for take-off. To assist this the rockets are fired, whereupon the cables 26, 27 are burned and the torque tube 23 is allowed to rotate thereby freeing the pin 16 only if both rockets ignite. The rockets are secured to the aircraft by spring-loaded pin- and-slot connections so that when the rockets are expended they automatically fall away.
