Abstract

1422987 Tail units DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 1 June 1973 [3 June 1972] 26359/73 Heading F3A A tail unit for a rocket or projectile intended for firing from the barrel 1 of a weapon, comprises: a plurality of erectile fins 9 which are pivoted at 10 and swing out tangentially when the projectile leaves the barrel owing to a pin 11, extending from each of the fins, being driven rearwardly along an arcuate slot 12 in a casing 4 of the tail unit by a sleeve 7 which, up to a predetermined instant after firing the projectile, is retained against displacement. The sleeve 7 is displaced by inertia or by propellant gas pressure, with the optional assistance of a spring 8. To hold the sleeve against displacement until the predetermined instant there is provided: shear pins; a disc which fractures under the pressure of the propellant gases; or a sleeve 16 which is deformed radially outwardly to release a supporting disc 15. An orifice in the disc 15 enables the gases from a launching motor 5 to ignite an initiator (52, 53, 54), Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), for a cruising motor 19.
