Abstract
A method for imparting a desired configuration to keratinous fibres and filaments, e.g. human hair, wool, horsehair, fur and other epidermal fibres, comprises imparting the configuration to the fibres, destabilizing them and treating them, while held in the configuration with an amino alkyl titanate or an amino alkyl zirconate. The amino alkyl groups may be derived from an alcohol having the formula HORNR1R11, in which R is an ethylene or alkyl substituted ethylene radical, R1 is a beta-hydroxyalkyl or betaamino alkyl radical and R11 is hydrogen, an alkyl hydrocarbon group containing from 1 to 3 carbon atoms or a betahydroxyalkyl or beta-amino alkyl radical. The ester may be a liquid, which may be applied to the fibres without dilution, or it may be applied to the fibres in aqueous solution. The titanates may contain from 2.5 to 8 amino alcoholic hydroxyl groups, including those which are esterified to form R-O-Ti linkages, for each titanium atom, and may be produced by an ester interchange reaction between di- or triethanolamine or beta aminoethylethanolamine and butyl titanate. The fibres may be destabilized by treatment with superheated steam; solutions of mercaptans, alkali sulphides, thioglycollates, sulphites or bisulphites; urea; guanidine hydrochloride; oxidizing agents; acids; or basic or neutral salts; in examples there are used aqueous solutions of sodium meta-disulphite, sodium sulphite and isopropyl alcohol; sodium sulphite and sodium bisulphite; sodium sulphite and ammonium carbonate; thioglycerol and ammonia; hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid; thioglycollic acid and ammonia and sodium metabisulphite and guanidine carbonate. The pH of these solutions may be between 4 and 9. After destabilizing the fibres are rinsed. The ester may be a solution of triethanolamine titanate; triisopropanolamine titanate; tetra-beta-aminoethylethanolamine titanate; triethanolamine titanate and hydrogen peroxide; triethanolamine titanate, sorbitol and hydrogen peroxide or triisopropanolamine zirconate. Human hair may be waved or straightened, and wool flannel may be pleated. The fibres may be rinsed and dried after treatment with the titatium or zirconium ester. The destabilizing solution may be applied at room or elevated temperature, and the titanium or zircoconium ester may be applied at temperatures from room temperature to boiling point. Specification 745,179 is referred to.
