Abstract

Class 38(5) An electric switch actuated mechanically or by hand comprises a spindle or plunger rod D<SP>1</SP>, a plurality of similar stationary terminal blocks A mounted in two rows parallel to the plunger, and one or more contact strips D carried by the plunger to bridge pairs of contacts. The strips D are mounted by means of spring-loaded screws e<SP>1</SP> on holders d of insulating material, and make sliding contact with the terminal blocks in slots a<SP>1</SP>. The bridging contacts are separated by spacers c and a spring d<SP>2</SP> is arranged to oppose forward motion The contact blocks A are mounted in fours on individual bases of insulating material B, the adjacent contacts on the same side of the plunger being separated by insulating blocks a. In a modification (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) a spacer c is replaced by a spring and two contact holders are loosely mounted on the plunger, one of them being retained by a latch. Movement of the spindle causes the second holder to release the latch whereby the first contact holder moves rapidly forward. In a further modification (Fig. 6, not shown) in which switching takes place on movement of the spindle either forwards or backwards, contact holders are loosely mounted on the spindle being retained against a circlip between them by springs acting on their outer sides.
