755,829. Turbines; centrifugal and axialflow compressors &c. AKT.-GES. FUR TECHNISCHE STUDIEN, Sept. 15, 1952 [Oct. 25, 1951], No. 23128/52. Classes 110(1) and 110(3). [Also in Group XL(b)] Relative movement between the fixed and moving parts of steam or gas turbines or centrifugal and axial flow compressors and blowers due to different thermal expansion of the parts is determined by mounting radio-active material on one of the parts and providing means on the other part which' vary the rays reaching a detector in accordance with the relative movement of the parts. As shown, a radio-active substance 6 is applied to the edge of the moving blading 2 and rays pass through the steel casting 3, insulating lining 4 and sheet metal casing 5 to a Geiger counter 7. A recess 5' is provided in the steel casing so that the output of the Geiger tube is a maximum when the blade is located directly beneath it and is reduced as the blading is moved in either direction relatively to it. In modifications (Figs. 2, 3 and 4 not shown) a flange forming a thickening on the steel casing is used to modify the path of the rays, or additional metallic screening members may be positioned in the lagging 4. The radio-active substance may be applied to a fixed guide blade disc, a projection or covering strip being provided extending laterally from the periphery of the rotor wheel. The arrangement may be employed to detect relative radial movement of parts.
