Abstract
The invention comprises spherical pellets of trinitrotoluene (TNT) having diameters of from 1/16 to 3/16 inch, an absolute density of from 1.55 to 1.60 gms. per cc., and a bulk density of from 0.90 to 1.05 gms. per c.c. The pellets are prepared by suddenly chilling spherical droplets of molten TNT suspended in an aqueous medium. Dry molten TNT from the steam hopper 1 feeds a constant head dropping pan 7 and flows through capillary tubes 9 to form liquid droplets at the top of the water-filled tower 8. Steam coils 10 maintain the water in the region of tubes 9 at above the melting point of TNT. The droplets solidify on falling to the cooler water at the bottom of the tower and are carried by cold water from inlet 13 through pipe 15 to dewatering screen 17 from which they are removed and air-dried. A minor quantity of an <PICT:0755695/IV(a)/1> oxygen-providing material may be added to the TNT before pelleting. Examples illustrate (1) the uniformity in size of the pellets; (2) a comparison of their bulk density; and (3) of their sensitivity to detonation with other forms of TNT.
