A wire is insulated with a layer of a vulcanized pure gum rubber compound, produced from a modified crepe rubber obtained form a mixture of natural rubber latex and a minor proportion of vulcanized natural rubber latex. The compound may be extruded on to the wire and then subjected to a continuous vulcanization process. The wires thus insulated may be used to form pairs or quads for communication cables.
