Abstract

The dyeability of polyamide textile materials is improved by treating them with a reaction product of dicyandiamide, cyanamide or guanidine with a linear polyalkyleneimine of the formula:- <FORM:0755520/IV(c)/1> wherein Y is -NH2, -OH or a halogen, n is 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 and m is a whole number greater than 0. Treatment may be effected at 50 DEG -100 DEG C., or at 100 DEG -130 DEG C. under pressure. The materials may be immersed in an aqueous or organic solvent solution of the reaction product and then heated. Alternatively the reaction product may be applied by padding and the material then steamed, or it may be applied locally as a printing paste. Undrawn fibres may be treated, in which case the reaction product may be applied at the fibre extrusion stage in association with a lubricant. Specified polyalkyleneimines are diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, bis-hexamethylene triamine and those prepared by initiating the polymerization of ethylene imine with hydrochloric acid. Numerous examples are given in which polyamide textiles are treated with various reaction products and then dyed with acid dyestuffs, the dyeing in one case being after-chromed.
