Abstract

The dyeing properties of articles, e.g. textiles, of polymethylene terephthalates are improved by treating the articles at 50-220 DEG C. with an organic compound containing at least one secondary or tertiary amino group, together with one or more primary amino groups and/or one or more alcoholic hydroxyl groups. Specified organic sompounds are diethanolamine, triethanolamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, N - beta - hydroxyethyl - para - phenylene diamine, N : N - dimethyl - para - phenylene diamine and N-betahydroxyethyl-ethylenediamine. In examples (1), (2), (4) and (5), polyethylene terephthalate yarn or cloth is passed through an aqueous solution of triethanolamine or N-betahydroxyethyl-ethylene diamine, dried at 100 DEG C., then baked at 165-185 DEG C., and finally washed free from amine and dried; (6) and (7) polyethylene terephthalate yarn is immersed in a solution at 95 DEG C. containing either triethylene tetramine and beta-methoxy ethanol or tetraethylene pentamine and dioxane; the yarn is then washed with water.ALSO:Textile articles of polymethylene terephthalates are given an improved receptivity to dispersed dyestuffs, acid dyestuffs, vat dyestuffs and chrome dyestuffs by treating them with an organic compound containing at least one secondary or tertiary amino group, together with one or more primary amino groups and/or one or more alcoholic hydroxyl groups, at a temperature of 50 DEG -220 DEG C. Specified organic compounds are diethanolamine, triethanolamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, N - beta - hydroxyethyl - paraphenylenediamine, N : N - dimethyl-para - phenylene diamine and N - betahydroxyethyl - ethylene diamine. In examples (1) - (5) polyethylene terephthalate yarn or cloth is passed through an aqueous solution of triethanolamine or N - betahydroxyethyl ethylene diamine, dried at 100 DEG C., then baked at 165 DEG -185 DEG C., and finally washed free from amine and dried; the treated yarn or cloth is then dyed either by immersing it in an aqueous suspension containing 4 - nitro-41 - N - hydroxyethyl - N - ethylaminoazobenzene or by immersing it in an aqueous solution containing sodium 4 : 8-diaminoanthrarufin - 2 : 6 - disulphonic acid and sulphuric acid; (6) and (7) polyethylene terephthalate yarn is immersed in a solution at 95 DEG C. containing either triethylene tetramine and beta-methoxy ethanol or tetraethylene pentamine and dioxane. The treated yarn is then washed with water and dyed by the first process of examples (1) - (5).
