A process of providing a planographic printing surface on the face of a paper sheet having inherently insufficient wet strength and resistance to water-penetration for planographic printing on an offset printing machine comprises applying to one side of the sheet, from aqueous solution, a mixture of a hydrophilic colloid and a minor proportion of less hydrophilic polyvinyl alcohol, an insolubilizing agent for the colloid and a volatile inhibitor for the insolubilizing action of the agent on the colloid, the solution containing the hydrophilic colloid also containing 0-20 per cent of mineral filler, based on the dry weight of the coating obtained, and having a viscosity of 10-300 centipoises, and drying the coating thus obtained. The coating is particularly suitable for paper sheets not originally intended to form planographic plates. In a preferred example 1.9 parts by weight of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and 0.7 parts by weight of polyvinyl alcohol constituting the hydrophilic colloids, 94.5 parts by weight of water, 2.5 parts by weight of glycerine, 1.0 part by weight of copper sulphate constituting the insolubilizer and 0.5 parts by weight of ammonia hydroxide as the inhibitor were applied as a single solution to a paper sheet having a high porosity and the sheet dried under infra lamps at 65‹ C. for two or three minutes. The polyvinyl alcohol is added in proportion not greater than one-third of the weight of the main hydrophilic colloid. Examples of suitable hydrophilic colloids which may be used are carboxymethyl cellulose compounds, starch, gum arabic, gum tragacanth, mesquite gum, larchgum, alginic acids and salts thereof, and alkali salts of dibasic acid styrene copolymers. Inert mineral fillers such as colloidal clay, barium sulphate and calcium carbonate may be used. Insolubilizers which may be used are mineral acids, e.g. hydrochloric acid, and salts and compounds of polyvalent metals, e.g. aluminium, ferric and copper sulphate. The image portions of the plate may be applied before or after coating and if desired the coating may be applied in two solutions, the second containing the insolubilizing agent. Application is effected by a manual spraying operation, or by means of a small coating machine. U.S.A. Specification 2,582,347 is referred to.
