Abstract

755,204. Electrostatic precipitation. RESEARCH CORPORATION. Dec. 7, 1954 [Jan. 21, 1954], No.35399/54. Class 39 (1) In an electrostatic precipitator in which the electrodes are cleaned by high-frequency rapping, the frequency of the rapping is.varied over a definite range so that all points along the length of the electrodes are agitated. The range is preferably sufficient to produce resonance at more than one harmonic of the fundamental resonant frequency of the electrodes. The arrangement shown comprises a precipitator unit 22 having plate collector electrodes 24 and rod discharge electrodes 2 supported by cross arms 4 fixed to spacer beams 26 supported by high-tension insulators (not shown) from a high-tension bus-bar 30. Pneumatic vibrators 8 are secured to bars 6 attached to the cross arms 4 and are supplied with air, steam or other suitable gas through flexible metal clad high-pressure hoses 32 connected to supply pipes 36 and feeder pipes 38 and 40, the latter passing through a high-tension bushing 28 to a flexible hose 42 and a pipe 44 connected to an insulator tube assembly 46. The supply of gas is controlled by a valve 56 connected to a system of supply pipes 48 feeding the insulator tube assembly 46 in each section of the precipitator through a variable-pressure control device 54 individual to each section. The device 54 may be of the reciprocating piston type described in Specification 699,867 and produces a periodic rise and fall of pressure in the pipe 46 with a consequent periodic increase and decrease of the frequency of the vibrators 8. Electrical vibrators may be used in place of the pneumatic vibrators and controlled by continuously varying the voltage over a predetermined range. As an alternative to varying the frequency of the individual vibrators, a plurality of vibrators, each operating at a different frequency within the range, can be employed and are preferably energized separately for short periods to prevent mutual interference.
