Abstract

Purified and mobile liquid sulphur is obtained from hot gases, such as those derived from the roasting of sulphide ores, by cooling the gas by indirect heat exchange, to a temperature of 0-10 DEG C. above the dew point of the sulphur vapour, bringing the cooled gases into contact with a surface cooled below the dew point of the sulphur vapour and removing particles of liquid and solid impurities so formed; finally the bulk of the sulphur is condensed by indirect heat exchange in one or more further cooling stages. The indirect heat exchange may be with cold roasting gases or with water to produce steam. The removal of impurties by cooling to not more than 10 DEG C. below the dew point allows the condensation of sulphur with the impurities and renders the impurities mobile.
