Abstract

755,136. Dashpots. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. April 22, 1955 [April 23, 1954], No. 11796/54. Class 108 (3). [Also in Group XXXVII] A dashpot for damping the movement of a member (not shown, but connected to a bridge member 5) such as the moving contact assembly of a circuit breaker comprises a cylinder 8 having an annular partition 8a, on each side of which is slidable a respective piston 10, 14, the piston 10 being secured to a rod 11 adapted to engage the member 5 as it approaches a first extreme position, and the piston 14 being slidable on the rod 11 and having an extension 15 adapted to engage with the member 5 as it approaches a second extreme position, the cylinder 8 being surrounded by a liquid-filled casing 17 having means to permit liquid fluid flow between each side of each piston. In operation, when the circuit breaker is tripped, the contact assembly moves downwardly and, towards the end of its travel, the bridge member 5 strikes the extension 15. This acts on the piston 14, driving oil through orifices 19, 20a, 20b, 20c and 20d. The piston 14 finally engages an extension 10a of the piston 10 driving the latter downwardly until it engages an abutment ring 22. During closing of the breaker, a spring 16 returns the piston 14, and near the end of the movement, the member 5 engages an abutment 13 on the rod 11 to return the piston 10 to its previous position. The casing 17 is connected at 18 with oil in a tank 4 containing the switch gear. The piston 10 is axially adjustable on the screw-threaded end of the rod 11 in quarterturns defined by slots 12 and a pin 12a.
