Abstract

754,736. Automatic control systems. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Feb. 1, 1955 [March 1, 1954], No. 6010/54. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XL (c)] In a radar system (see Group XL (c)) a mirror 20<SP>1</SP> freely attached to an aerial structure is automatically maintained parallel to a fixed mirror 20 by photoelectric means. As shown a light source 30 projects a beam of light through lens 31 on to the underside of mirror 20<SP>1</SP> and this is reflected back through the same lens to pass through a semi-silvered 45 degree mirror 31A to the second mirror 20 which is accurately horizontal and fixed to the ground. Mirror 20 reflects back the light to mirror 31A whence part is reflected to a photo-cell 32 on to which the light is focused, the output from cell 32 being applied through an amplifier 33 to a solenoid 34 pulling against a spring 35 and controlling the inclination of mirror 20<SP>1</SP>. The transmission/reflection ratio of mirror 31A depends upon the angle of incidence of the light thereon and is substantially unity when said angle is equal to 45 degrees so that when the two mirrors 20 and 20<SP>1</SP> are parallel, approximately one quarter of the light reflected downwards by mirror 20<SP>1</SP> will reach the cell 32 but any departure from this condition changes the energization of the cell 32 causing an automatic restoration of parallelism.
