Abstract

1347477 Thermal imaging systems EMI Ltd 17 May 1971 [29 May 1970] 26079/70 Heading H4F Thermal energy from a scene is scanned across a stack of detectors 6 by a rocking mirror 8, 9 and lenses 7, 10. A photo-emissive diode 5 provides reference thermal energy at a certain time during each scan and the outputs of detectors 6 due to diode 5 are used in turn to control the gain of the common amplifier coupled to the detectors 6 to compensate for variations in the detectors 6. If the reference energy from diode 5 is not sufficient to swamp the scene energy a shutter (11, Fig. 2b, not shown) may be included having an arm carrying a filter which passes only radiation from the source 5, the shutter arm being rotated in front of detectors 6. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 1(a), 1(b), not shown), scanning is accomplished by a prism which has a facet to reflect light from diode 5 to detectors 6 and to stop scene light at a certain rotational position. In either embodiment diode 5 is adjustable automatically in accordance with the scene brightness or manually to vary the brightness and contrast of the reproduced picture.
