Abstract

The invention comprises dyestuffs of formula <FORM:0754562/IV(c)/1> where B and C are benzene or naphthalene residues in which the azo groups are in the p-position to each other and D is a 1-amino-7-hydroxy- or 2-amino-8-hydroxynaphthalene mono- or di-sulphonic acid with the azo group in o position to the hydroxy group, m being 1 or 2 They may be made by coupling a diazotised 1-amino-8-hydroxynaphthalene mono- or di-sulphonic acid with an appropriate amine of the benzene or naphthalene series which may contain sulphonic acid groups, diazotising the amino-azo compound thus obtained and coupling with another such amine, further diazotising the amino-disazo compound so produced and coupling it in an alkaline medium with a mono- or disulphonic acid of 1-amino-7-hydroxy- or 2-amino-8-hydroxy-naphthalene. The initial component is preferably first converted to an o-sulphonic acid ester with benzene or p-toluene sulphonic acid, the ester group being finally removed by hydrolysis in alkali after dyestuff-formation. Initial components specified are 1-amino-8-hydroxynaphthalene-3-mono-and - 3, 6 - di - sulphonic acids. Specified middle components are 1-amino-2-methoxy-5-methylbenzene, 1-aminonaphthalene and its -6- and -7- sulphonic acids. End components specified are 1-amino-7-hydroxynaphthalene-3-sulphonic acid and 2-amino-8- hydroxynaphthalene-3, 6-disulphonic acid. The dyestuffs dye cotton and regenerated cellulose in reddish to greenish grey shades. Examples are provided of the use of certain of the above specified components in the preparation of tris-azo dyestuffs.
