Abstract
754191. Piston rings. CROSS MANUFACTURING CO., (1938) Ltd. Nov. 8, 1954, No. 32252/54. Class 122(1) [Also in Group XXII] A piston ring 1 has a cross-section which is of substantially trapezium shape with the outer side 2 which in use contacts the cylinder wall 3) recessed to form a groove 4 so that the corners 6 are made as sharp edges which alone contact the cylinder wall when the ring is in use, the faces 8 having a taper which converges towards the centre of the ring, the included angle of the taper being not less than 10 degrees. The angle is preferably of the order of 30 degrees and a further deep recess 4a may be provided as shown. The ring may be planar or helical and in the latter case may consist of several turns to fit a corresponding helical groove in the piston, the lower turns of this groove having oil-ejection holes. The ring may have a cross-section in which the bottom of the recess and the inner 'peripheral wall are rounded.
