Class 110(3) [Also in Group XXXIII] A propulsion nozzle jet deflecting device comprises peripheral jet guiding means 10 outside -the normal jet path and controllable means for giving the jet a rotational velocity about the nozzle axis to urge it outwards centrifugally to encounter the jet guiding means, said controllable means comprising fluid injectors opening into the jet, forming a helical auxiliary jet acting on the main jet. In Fig. 1, a plurality of sets 6, 7, 8, 9 of circumferentially disposed slots act as orifices for inwardly directed jets of auxiliary fluid fed from a common manifold 3 supplied by a pipe 4 and valve 5, leading from a turbo-jet. or an auxiliary compressor. As is shown, the inclination of the slots to the nozzle axis increases progressively in a downstream direction, and the bores in the nozzle wall which form the slots are also inclined progressively more to the radial direction. The rotation imparted to the main flow makes it spread out radially to encounter the vanes 10. In Fig. 8, auxiliary fluid from a pipe 11 is tangentially injected into the space betwen surfaces 14 and 15, shaped so that the cross section of flow near the orifice is small, and the angular velocity of the fluid is thus increased. This fluid then acts on the main flow to set it in rotation. A further axial auxiliary jet may issue from pipe 17.
