In a vapour generator having an economiser made in sections 23, 26, 30 located one beyond another in the path of flue gases, cool feed liquid is supplied to the section 30 nearest the furnace 15, and thence passes first to a heater 36 in which it heats combustion air and then to another economiser section 23 remote from the furnace, for reheating before entering the generator. The reheated feed liquid from the section 23 is mixed with cool feed liquid and passed through a third economiser section 26.
