Abstract
753,554. Internal shoe - drum brakes. PORSCHE, F. Sept. 9, 1954 [Nov. 28, 1953], No. 26123/54. Class 103 (1). In a servo brake, the floating brake shoes are supported indirectly through an adjustable abutment by means of two separate arms of different length which can swing round a common point of rotation. In the embodiment illustrated, the primary shoe 5 and the secondary shoe 6 are expanded against the action of return springs 7 by an expanding device 2 secured to the brake carrier plate 1. The shoes 5 and 6 are supported by means of arms 9, 10 and an adjustment device 11, having an adjusting nut 12 and adjusting screws 13, 131. The latter screws are provided with semispherical heads 15, 15<SP>1</SP> having two parallel flat surfaces to prevent rotation and are situated in complementary holes 17, 171 in the arms 9 and 10 respectively. Arm 9 is provided with forked extensions 21, 22 which serve as anchors for the lower return springs 7, and the arms 9 and 10 pivot on a pin 18 fixed to the brake carrier plate and are bent over towards the axis of the adjustment device 11 and are provided with curved application surfaces 20, 20<SP>1</SP> with which slide blocks 8, attached to the brake shoes 5, 6 are in contact. The arm 9 is shorter than the arm 10 so as to ensure that the force transmitted from the primary shoe 5 to the secondary shoe 6 is approximately half the force developed in the primary shoe 5 to ensure uniform wear of the brake linings 3 and 4. During braking action, servo action of the brake is obtained as the arms 9, 10, including the adjustment device 11, swing radially round the pin 18 corresponding to the direction of rotation. R. When braking ceases, the shoes are moved to their release position by return springs 7 and are straightened up through the arms 9 and 10 by a centralising spring 26. Adjustment of the brake shoes is achieved manually by turning the adjusting nut 12. A further embodiment is described in which automatic adjustment for brake lining wear is provided in the form of a ratchet and pawl mechanism.
